August 2013 News

The countdown to the 2013 Big Game Battle has begun and we look forward to seeing everyone August 15th on Nantucket. This friendly competition tournament continues to grow as shown in the overwhelming donations, raffles, silent auction, and time you’ve put in. This year we have 41 boats and are introducing the “Team Challenge” as well as the “Overnight Challenge” (for bragging rights).

Check in will be from 3:00pm-6:00pm on Thursday, August 15th outside of John Jay Wharf Cottage, tournament headquarters. The Captain’s meeting will be held at 7:00pm in the same area as check-in was previously. Also raffle tickets will be sold this year at the Captain’s meeting, so get them early. The Award’s banquet will be held at the “Dreamland Theater” downtown on South Water Street, on the top floor. Cocktail reception will begin at 7:00pm, with dinner starting at 8:00pm, followed by the charity presentation and concluding with the awards. Please remember this is a non-smoking property and no open containers of alcohol upon arrival. These rules must be followed or we will be asked to leave, please tell your crews.

We are proud to honor George Bassett for all his support he has given to our tournament over the years and together we’ve chosen to help the Nantucket STAR program, an on-island charity giving back to Nantucket which has been a kind host to our event. This on-island charity provides specialized, therapeutic, accessible recreation, and adaptive sports to a wide range of challenges and disabilities. The program looks to reach out to other families to help provide a better life to these children with our support.

As a start $50.00 from every entry fee for a total of $2050.00 has been donated directly to Nantucket STAR. Along with Auction item #1, donated by Nantucket Boat Basin, with the winning bid of $2200.00 from Dan Evans continues our fundraising efforts. There will be a raffle as well as a silent auction at the award ceremony with the proceeds going to the Nantucket STAR program. Tickets will be sold throughout the weekend event for $20.00 a ticket. Please see attached the 2013 tournament rules. The point system has been adjusted in a few categories with input from last year’s Captains. Also included are billfish and tuna identification charts to better educate all captains and crews involved. We have added an “Overnight Challenge” and “Team Challenge” to keep things exciting. This is not a money tournament and there will be no tour-nament sponsored Calcutta – this can be handled between the boats at the dock .
After you arrive at the Nantucket Boat Basin, have a representative check your team in at the welcome table located at the John Jay Wharf Cottage. The Captain’s meeting will be held at the dock in the same area starting at 7:00 PM. The tournament rules will be reviewed at this time with questions an-swered. We encourage any boats to have food and drink “welcome tables” around the docks as in pre-vious years to add to the festivities.
As a group, our charity endeavors continue supporting the Nantucket STAR program in honor George Bassett. This is an on island charity for children facing many challenges and disorders with the goal to “leave no child behind” For the many years George and his crew have supported our event—let’s give back and make a difference in a child’s life.
We look forward to seeing everyone soon!
Thank You
Tournament Committee

February 2013

The tournament will once again be a charitable event. Over the past 11 years – George Bassett (Nantucket Boat Basin Manager) has supported our event and as well as become a close friend to all boat owners, captains, and crews. In honor of George Bassett, together we have chosen an on island charity called Nantucket S.T.A.R Program. Their mission is to provide specialized, therapeutic, accessible recreation, and adaptive sports to children with a wide range of challenges and disabilities. Their goal is to leave no child left behind due to the degree of challenges, be it physical, mental, emotional, or neurological. We feel this is a perfect fit giving back to an “on island” cause and hope for you support. To learn more, please go to their website www.nantucketstar.com
