We finally had some perfect weather for the 10-year anniversary of the Big Game Battle with calm seas and the overall fishing results the strongest to date. Many boats traveling to the canyons were rewarded with blue marlin, white marlin, yellow fin tuna, big eye tuna, wahoo, and mahi. Some people say the big eye bite at Welkers Canyon was “epic” and was the most action they could remember.

The night life around the docks and local establishments was alive as always with the disco ball still spinning
from the “Harmony” cottage as boats departed from the dock in the early morning hours.

There were 30 boats that participated in this year’s event and successfully together we raised $20,000.00 to support “Camp Harbor View” and “The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.” The proceeds will go directly to sponsor
three individuals to attend each camp next summer.

The committee would like to thank all of our sponsors and private donors who helped us reach our goals financially but also in helping to make the tournament stronger each year. With everyone’s support in buying raffle tickets, silent and live auction items and generous donations, our group will put a smile on six campers’ faces and give them an opportunity that might not have been available to them without your help. I am sure they will come away from the experience with lasting memories. Thank you!

Congratulations to Team Happy Jack – the overall tournament point winner and 1st place winner in Division I – followed by a hard fought battle for 2nd place from Team Reel Estate and Team Castafari for 3rd place.

Congratulations to all Division II winners including Team Snow Bear placing 1st with Team Finactic right on
their tails for 2nd place and Team Miss Bridget for 3rd place.

This year we had some improvements to the weekend including a pre-game reception on Thursday night hosted by Team Miss Bridget, the live entertainment at the catered dock party, carving stations at the award banquet and the commemorative cooler and sun shirts. These details were all made possible by support from you. Our next challenge will be to have our award banquet at “The Dreamland Building” which is currently under construction but set to be open for Summer 2012.

In the upcoming months we will send out a follow up survey that we ask for your participation in completing.
This is your tournament and together we can make it a lasting event we all can look forward to each summer.
I have received many outstanding photos from your Teams to date that will be posted on the website shortly. If you have any additional photos or comments, please send them to me at dfoneill@condyne.com.

Thank you again for participating in the success of the Big Game Battle and the support of “Camp Harbor View” and “The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp”.

After a slow start to the season, the weather is finally beginning to warm up and we are hearing reports of bluefin being caught. The 10th annual Big Game Battle is quickly approaching and the tournament committee continues to strive to make this year’s event the most memorable. Participation continues to be positive with nearly 27 boats registered for the event. We do have a few openings available and we encourage people to continue to spread the word to friends and colleagues.

This year we are proud to announce that the charity aspect of the event will continue based on your overwhelming generosity for IRSF last year. We have decided to support two charities for the 2011 tournament: “The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp” and “Camp Harborview”. These wonderful foundations provide terminally ill children and inner city youth oppotunities to experience attending summer camp. We encourage you to learn more about these camps at their websites: www.holeinthewallgang.org and www.chvf.org.

Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is a nonprofit, year-round center serving children and their families coping with cancer, sickle cell anemia, and other serious illnesses. Through summer sessions and family weekend programs at the Camp in Ashford, Connecticut, and year-round outreach to hospitals and clinics throughout the Northeast, the Camp will serve more than 17,500 children in 2011. Camp activities and caring counselors bring a sense of normalcy and adventure to children burdened with serious illness. All services are free of charge.

Camp Harbor View is a summer camp serving close to 1000 inner-city kids from Boston’s at-risk neighborhoods. Using 5 Key Areas of Development

Aquatics

The Arts

Sports & Fitness

Leadership Skills

Knowledge is Power

the foundation hopes to broaden the horizons of campers and encourage them to gain confidence and think outside the box. The camp has also developed extensive off-season programming that has enabled the staff to stay in touch with the campers and their families even when camp is not in session.

The fundraising for this year’s event will remain similar to last year with a portion of each boat entry being donated directly to the charities and the main fundraising coming from the raffle, silent auction and live auction.

There are many expenses connected with running the Big Game Battle. In the past, we have relied exclusively on our tournament registration fees, our volunteer committee’s time and effort, personal contributions and donations by local and national businesses. Last year, we were grateful to have received overwhelming support and sponsorship from several individuals as well as many organizations and we are looking to build on that success in 2011!

In an effort to maximize our charitable impact to Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and Camp Harborview, we are reaching out to individuals and organizations for help with tournament prizes and raffle items. This year we are going to offer sponsorship opportunities to participating companies, individuals or teams, in an effort to continue our charitable success. We truly hope that you will consider becoming a sponsor for this 10th Annual Big Game Battle. As always the committee will continue to work to make this year the best tournament of the summer for all involved.

Just as a reminder, the schedule for the weekend is as follows:

August 11th – Arrive on Nantucket. Captain’s meeting 7pm at Captain Tobey’s

August 12th – First day of fishing

August 13th – Second day of fishing with awards banquet at 7pm at Captain Tobey’s

August 14th – Depart Nantucket

Big Game Battle wants you to enjoy the new web site. We will be posting timely information here in our blog on the tournament, and perhaps even daily “action” during the tournament.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors this year, listed here on our sponsors page. We hope that you will do business with them.

This year our charity will be to support two camps for children “Camp Harbor View” and “The Hole in the Wall Gang” Each is unique but gives children the opportunity to experience camp which they may have not been able to experience without your support.

Last year we were able to raise an astounding $45,000 in 2010 for Rett Syndrome .

And lastly we would like to thank all of our participants, from year’s past to this year. Without you, this would not be possible.
