About The Big Game Battle

“The Big Game Battle” is an Invitational Fishing Tournament held in August on the historic island of Nantucket. The tournament was conceived by a group of weekend warriors looking for another excuse to spend time on the water fishing and participating in the Island festivities. The event was started in 2002 with three boats. This year (2014) we anticipate having 40 boats that will put us at capacity.

Boats range in size from 26 feet to 86 feet in length with an average crew of five. As you can see, we will be having over 200 people committed to having a fun weekend. The Captains and Crews of the boats have been known to talk a “Big Game” on and off the water. Which is how our tournament got its name.

Many boats fish east of Chatham for the blue fin tuna or south to the canyons in search of the blue marlin. Boats fish Hydrogarpher, Welker, Veatch and Atlantis Canyons also every year. The decision to have the event in the month of August was to have optimal conditions when the warm water moves closer inshore and sea conditions are typically the best.

Upon arrival, there is a Captain’s meeting to review the rules and point system and review any questions/comments. At this meeting, a tournament bag is given to each boat containing a variety of give aways and tournament tee shirts. After the first day of fishing, there will be appetizers and beverages set up at one of the wharf cottages to talk up a Big Game. After the second day of fishing, there will be an awards banquet at the new “Dreamland Theater” with dinner and many prizes. We are limited to forty boats, so if you are interested in the Big Game Battle on Nantucket, contact us early for availability.

This is a registered tournament. Every Captain and Crew Member fish at their own risk and is responsible to follow all Rules and Regulations of the National Marine Fisheries.
