Wrap-up 2013

August 30, 2013
To All Big Game Battle Participants,
I want to personally thank you for being a part of the 2013 Big Game Battle tournament. This year we were successful in many ways, but most important, strengthening our relationships as a group. With the 41 boats that participated, we had well over 250 people that attended the event.
In honor of George Bassett and his continued dedication to the Big Game Battle, together we successfully raised $30,000 for the on island charity, Nantucket STAR. Thanks to your generosity, the money will be used to provide specialized, therapeutic, accessible recreation and adaptive sports to children with a wide range of challenges and disabilities. Thank you Tina Steadman and crew for helping us exceed our goal in support of this fantastic cause.
Congratulations to all the winners in Division I, Division II, the Team Challenge and the Overnight Challenge. You have the bragging rights until 2014!

The combined total number of fish caught were as follows:

  • Blue Fins – 11
  • Yellow Fins – 99
  • Blue Marlins – 1
  • White Marlin – 18
  • Wahoo – 13
  • Mahi – 132
  • Big Eye – 18
  • Mako – 1
  • Swordfish – 1
  • Albacore – 97

The captains meeting change in venue to the dock was a sight to see with many cheers just for being back together on Nantucket. The mysterious helicopter was a live “Go Pro” camera filming the event by Nathan Palmer and can be seen on YouTube – Big Game Battle unofficial video.
The banquet at Dreamland went extremely well with many compliments to Jonas Baker from Slip 14 who organized and catered the event. Due to the influx of people that attended, our only regret was not being able to seat everyone at once. The Big Game Battle, PEI Trip and Nantucket STAR videos added to the entertainment and education for the evening.
One of the highlights of the night was having Eric Engdahl and Pete Frates re-cap our ALS – TDI charity efforts last year ending with a memorable standing ovation.
To cap off the evening, the plaque presented to George Bassett from his daughter Christy and Tina Steadman was a true appreciation of their love and friendship .
Finally, thank you for all your donations, sponsorships, and contributions which help to make this event one to look forward to year after year. Without your commitment this tournament would not be what it is today. Thank you also for the many kind emails supporting our efforts.
The Big Game Battle can be found on facebook with photos from the banquet uploaded already. Any photos or videos you can send, to be used on the website or in next year’s presentation, is appreciated. If you have a charity you would like to support for the 2014 Big Game Battle please contact us. This tournament is all of ours together, let’s continue the legacy!
Thank you again for participating in the 2013 Big Game Battle and your support for Nantucket STAR.
