June 2012 News

With reports of fish being caught out East, we are now wishing for the weather we had all winter and to get this rain season behind us! The 11th annual Big Game Battle is fast approaching and the tournament committee continues to strive to make this year’s event the most memorable. Registration for the event continues to be positive with 25 boats paid to date and an additional 10 committed to participating. We have a few openings available so we encourage people to continue to spread the word to friends and colleagues. As everyone is aware, slips in Nantucket are limited so we stress that people check availability as soon as possible and confirm existing reservations as summer is moving into full swing.

We are proud to announce that based on your overwhelming generosity over the past two years we are
going to continue the charitable aspect of the event. After successful events for IRSF, Hole in the Wall
Gang and Camp Harborview, this year we are going to focus on a cause that has touched members of the
group; ALS or Lou Gehrig ’s disease.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. The average lifespan for a person diagnosed with ALS is 3 to 5 years.

The ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) is the world’s leader in research aimed at thediscovery and development of effective treatments and a cure for ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Built by and for patients, the Cambridge, MA based research institute operates as a 501c3 nonprofit: combining the optimal entrepreneurial practices of a for profit biotech and pharmaceutical company with the passion and urgency of a nonprofit mission. The charity aspect of this year’s event will remain similar to past years with a portion of each boats entry
being donated directly to the charity with the main fundraising coming from the raffle, silent auction and
live auction.

There are many expenses connected with running the Big Game Battle including an upgrade to the
Awards Banquet Dinner which comes with a budget increase. In the past, we have relied exclusively on
our tournament registration fees, our volunteer committee’s time and effort, personal contributions and
donations by local and national businesses. Over the past couple of years, we were grateful to have
received overwhelming support and sponsorship from several individuals as well as many organizations
and we are looking to build on that success in 2012.

In an effort to maximize our charitable impact to ALS TDI, we are reaching out to individuals and
organizations again this year for help with tournament prizes, raffle and silent auction items. Once again,
this year we are going to offer sponsorship opportunities to participating companies, individuals and
teams in an effort to recognize the generosity that many have shown over the past few years. We truly
hope that your company, team or you as an individual will consider becoming a sponsor for the 11th
annual Big Game Battle.

The schedule of events is as follows with the additional events and the new location of the awards
banquet to be discussed in future newsletters.

As always, the committee will continue to work to make this year’s tournament the best tournament of the
summer for all involved as well as continue to try to raise awareness and money for worthy charities.
